Privacy Policy

Last updated: 19 June 2026

VoiceReader (“the extension”, “we”) reads web pages aloud. This policy explains exactly what data the extension handles and why.

Our rule, by design: we log product usage events, never the content of the pages you read, and no personal information beyond the minimum needed to run a paid account. We do not sell data.

What happens locally (nothing leaves your device)

  • Free reading uses your device’s built-in voices. When you read a page with the free system voices, the page text is processed on your computer by Chrome’s speech engine. That text is not sent to us or anyone else.
  • Preferences and reading position (chosen voice, speed, where you left off on a page) are stored in your browser’s local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) and stay on your device.

What is sent to our backend

  • Anonymous usage events. To understand which features work, the extension sends product events to our backend (api.exte-player.com) — for example “started reading”, “changed speed”, “opened the popup”. Each event includes a random anonymous ID generated on install (not tied to your identity), the event name, the extension version, and non-content properties (e.g. a speed value). Event data never includes the page’s text, URL content, or your browsing history.
  • Selected text — only when you use premium (neural) voices. Premium voices are synthesized on our server, so the specific text you choose to read aloud is sent to our backend and on to our text-to-speech provider (OpenAI) to generate the audio. Generated audio may be cached (keyed by a hash of the text + voice) to avoid re-synthesizing identical text. This applies only to premium playback; free system-voice reading never sends text.
  • Email address — only if you provide it. If you buy a subscription or restore a purchase, you may give an email address. We use it solely to (a) recover your license if you reinstall and (b) send a verification code for that recovery. Your email is never attached to usage events.

Third parties

  • OpenAI — synthesizes premium neural audio from the text you choose to read.
  • MoonPay — processes subscription payments. Card/payment details are handled by MoonPay; we never see or store them. We receive only a signed notification that a subscription is active.
  • Hetzner — hosts our backend (servers in Germany).

We do not sell or rent your data, and we do not use it for advertising.

Data retention

  • Anonymous events are retained for product analytics. They contain no page content and no identifying information.
  • Cached premium audio is retained to reduce cost and may be purged at any time.
  • Account email (if provided) is retained while the account is active.

Your choices

  • Use the free system voices to keep all reading fully on-device.
  • Don’t provide an email if you don’t want one stored (it’s only needed for purchase recovery across reinstalls).
  • Uninstalling the extension removes its local storage from your browser. To request deletion of an account email, contact us.

Permissions, briefly

storage (save your prefs/position locally), contextMenus (the right-click “Read” item), activeTab + scripting (read the page you’re on, only when you ask), and host access to api.exte-player.com (talk to our backend). The extension does not request access to your browsing history or to all your data on every site beyond what reading the current page requires.
